My disability insurance saved my practice, my house, and my retirement.

Although I’d been an OVMA member with insurance coverage ever since the OVMA first started, I didn’t think about my coverage when I was first admitted to hospital. Only after I was discharged did it occur to me that I should consider a claim. I was discharged in March two years ago, just over a month before my 70th birthday, so my timing was perfect to take advantage of the benefits.

I called Pottruff & Smith and they immediately provided me with the necessary forms. I received the claim payment promptly and then everything else fell into place.

The payment allowed me to pay for the 6 months I had paid toward the locum. Also, last summer, the roof on our home went – we needed a new one. The payment covered that too. Finally, the payment eased the financial pressure on my practice. My practice is a unique one. It’s a house call practice for companion animals. Clients appreciated my approach to their animals. My clients were often shut-in or handicapped. They trusted me. Their pet is their cherished connection and to have that trust extended to me was really something. That’s why I dearly wanted to hold out for the right person to take over the practice when I retired. The benefits payment allowed me to take that time.

If I had been on a retirement income, I couldn’t have done all this without struggling. I even considered cashing in savings bonds to pay for these expenses. It turned out that I didn’t need to. In fact, I put that money into mutual funds and am getting a better interest rate, so I more than saved my retirement funds. As it was, I sailed right through this.  You never think about actually using insurance when you buy it. But today I can say that it made all the difference to me and my wife in our retirement.

As we discussed, I am writing you a short note to tell OVMA members how much less expensive our auto insurance was to purchase through Pottruff & Smith. I compared three quotations from 3 different companies, including Pottruff & Smith, for our new Toyota Camry Hybrid and older Toyota Sienna. The other 2 quotes for similar coverage were $1879 and $1900. Pottruff & Smith’s price through OVMA membership program was $1429, less an additional $120 on our house insurance we already had with them. So, by grouping our insurance with the same company, the vehicles insurance cost was essentially $1309. And, as usual, the service was very good.
